One of the craziest nights of my career. Got tear gassed multiple times. Police shot rubber bullets at us even thought we were moving where they wanted us to go, holding up our press passes and yelling media.pic.twitter.com/bVtaUkXiwI
Protesters threw bottles and other projectiles that landed near us. A couple of times, police came running up, ignored me (a white, middle-aged man) and got in the face of my young black male colleague (who was also wearing a press pass and identifying himself as a reporter.
The day started nice - with a large peaceful protest that marched about 8 miles around Detroit, with police walking alongside and multiple cruisers out in front leading the way. Once night fell and a different crowd came in, it got wild.
