Protesters threw bottles and other projectiles that landed near us. A couple of times, police came running up, ignored me (a white, middle-aged man) and got in the face of my young black male colleague (who was also wearing a press pass and identifying himself as a reporter.

The day started nice - with a large peaceful protest that marched about 8 miles around Detroit, with police walking alongside and multiple cruisers out in front leading the way. Once night fell and a different crowd came in, it got wild.
