Still not sure what that means, but in this case, it evidently meant rephrasing all references to the Roman Empire -- you know -- to take that pesky 'Empire' out.

Reader, I refused, and wanted to read the editors' Introduction before allowing them to use my essay. This, by the way, is a volume with essays from the European classical past to the present day. So you can see why the sudden shyness about referring to 'empire' worries me.

Changing the theme of a special issue after commissioning is unprofessional, but perhaps sometimes unavoidable. But this raises so many questions -- both about the intellectual approach, and about entitlement to other researchers' time and energy.

I've been mulling over whether to give vent to this on twitter. I had the time to write this essay, wanted to do it anyway, and it has been re-submitted elsewhere. Others may not have that luxury. Please can we not do this!

I'm lucky that this wasn't meant to be part of my REF submission, or part of a publication trajectory for a job-search. But angry that -- questionable intellectual approach aside -- it shows such little consideration for those practicalities too!
