Here’s a fun history project for the weekend: count up the number of times that fighting between center-left and far-left parties and/or candidates have cleared the way for right-wing fascist movements to gain power.

Later that year, after passing the Enabling Act, another election was held. This time, no other parties--none at all--won seats. They weren't even allowed to run candidates.pic.twitter.com/D1HzNpYaHA

There is much more to the story of how the Nazis consolidated their power. A fractured, intimidated (and, as pointed out below, in some cases complicit) opposition is only a part of it. I recommend reading Ian Kershaw’s Hitler biographies for starters:https://books.google.com/books/about/Hitler.html?id=KFuxqau6bdUC …

Hitler was appointed chancellor by a government that ruled by decree, and the notion that DNVP was "never Nazi" when they served as ministers in the Nazi-controlled government is uh.. interesting.
-
Also, one of the reasons the SPD lost so many seats in the 1932 election was its collaboration with Bruning despite the way Bruning was installed explicitly to eliminate the SPD from government. Not a good look.

i mean it’s true that fighting between the KPD and the SPD made it so the two groups couldn’t effictively resist/overthrow the nazi party, but the SPD were the only political party in the reichstag to vote against the enabling act. centre right & centrist parties voted to pass it
