Keeping in mind confirmation happens as a teenager; that means the Christian model is that once you make a religious choice as a teen (which means you can’t really consent since parents can force it), you can never consent to joining another religion in the future.

I’ve converted to Judaism, but was confirmed Catholic. My first husband was born Jewish. So my family priest will send Wel wishes in Jewish holidays to my husband but not me b/c I am not Jewish to him.

If my children decided to convert to Catholicism for any reason, I would have to be part of that process, b/c in the Catholic Church I remain a lifelong Catholic. Even my adult child can’t choose to join unless I’m involved despite my leaving.

If I were to remarry to, say, a Catholic person, I would have to go through all pre-marriage requirements as a Catholic to marry at all despite converting to Judaism b/c my conversion is not real.

Parents are considered responsible for their children’s choices, even adult ones. So my Catholic parents get to listen to numerous priests lecture them about how THEY are going to hell b/c I’m a “bad Catholic” for pretending to be Jewish when clearly I can’t be Jewish.

My Catholic godmothers continue to have moral responsibility for keeping me in the path towards Catholicism so they, too, think my attempted conversion reflects on their chances at salvation.

If you cannot consent to leave a religion, if your conversions are considered invalid, that is a consent problem, & it impacts the entire family. Maybe we should talk about that more.

Oh & b/c I’m “not Jewish,” the Catholic Church would not consider my children Jewish through me, which means some priests will harass my parents about their godless grandkids, too. It’s really fantastic.

God it’s even worse. Anyone BAPTIZED cannot leave. So it’s literally it somethjng was done to you as a child against your will, you can never consent to having it undone. Yeah. Fuck Christianity for that.

Too many threads happening now so muting this. I have way too many issues w/ Christianity to spend my day arguing about it.

To my understanding, you can technically put in a document with the parish you were baptised in, saying you are an apostate, which leads ipso facto to an excommunication, but they can't count you as a former Catholic because of canonical law.

It's a bit weird, though, because according to Christian doctrine, God's salvific acts require your own actions to proceed and I'd argue being baptised is something you're subjected to and can't consent to if you're a kid. I'd argue that from their own PoV, only adult baptisms

I came here to chime in with the Jewish thought that you’re Jewish as a tribal thing whether you’re observant or not, but that is a whole different order of BS than I ever knew about. I’m so sorry

This is why I did not have my kids baptized. My mother threatened to do it herself to save their souls. I told her that would be the last time she saw them. Catholic mothers of a certain age are fun.

Yeah, I thought it was baptism that made it, because I never got confirmed (my mom seems to feel pretty guilty about that), and there's still this... assumption on the part of my parents that someday I'll start attending church again and stuff.

It's no wonder so many "recovering Catholics" I know are more or less pagan -- no conversion required. I hadn't ever thought of it like this.
