Keeping in mind confirmation happens as a teenager; that means the Christian model is that once you make a religious choice as a teen (which means you can’t really consent since parents can force it), you can never consent to joining another religion in the future.

Too many threads happening now so muting this. I have way too many issues w/ Christianity to spend my day arguing about it.

To my understanding, you can technically put in a document with the parish you were baptised in, saying you are an apostate, which leads ipso facto to an excommunication, but they can't count you as a former Catholic because of canonical law.

It's a bit weird, though, because according to Christian doctrine, God's salvific acts require your own actions to proceed and I'd argue being baptised is something you're subjected to and can't consent to if you're a kid. I'd argue that from their own PoV, only adult baptisms

I came here to chime in with the Jewish thought that you’re Jewish as a tribal thing whether you’re observant or not, but that is a whole different order of BS than I ever knew about. I’m so sorry

I'm not a Christian, but i am a mystic, and i've met Yeshua bar Yusuf. He's a lot more chill than basically all the people who pretend to follow him.

This is why I did not have my kids baptized. My mother threatened to do it herself to save their souls. I told her that would be the last time she saw them. Catholic mothers of a certain age are fun.

Yeah, I thought it was baptism that made it, because I never got confirmed (my mom seems to feel pretty guilty about that), and there's still this... assumption on the part of my parents that someday I'll start attending church again and stuff.

It's no wonder so many "recovering Catholics" I know are more or less pagan -- no conversion required. I hadn't ever thought of it like this.
