Nexus 9 will be end-of-life next month so this is the final guaranteed security update: https://twitter.com/CopperheadOS/status/914979923802062848 …. Once Google stops doing factory image releases, full security updates won't be possible since there won't be updated drivers and firmware anymore, only AOSP patches.

Lord how I hate Android for poisoning our devices with unmaintainable obsolete-by-design junk OSes.

The Android portion can be updated for 2 more years. It's the hardware platform that's no longer maintained. There's just no point in supporting a device without full driver and firmware security updates for us.

I fully agree. It's incredibly disappointing Android left it to the whimsy of chipmakers what support they wanted to offer.

The vast out-of-tree BSP model is broken and insecure by design & is a crime against humanity. e-waste & insecurity.

Convincing hardware vendors to provide longer firmware updates and upstream Linux kernel drivers seems near impossible though. They would need to do most of the testing and maintenance too or it's not going to stay viable in mainline.

So, what? They're off the hook making a top end devices that's dead & insecure after 3 years? That's so *vile*.

Even now that the Linux Foundation has been paid off to do 6 year LTS, that's still grossly insufficient.

This model of kicking out hardware that's going to be dead & useless in a couple years is poisonous, to consumers & this planet (e-waste).

https://developer.android.com/things/sdk/drivers/index.html … is what they're doing for embedded but the mobile mess is too deep. Remains to be seen how much adoption Android Things gets vs unmaintained Android / Linux forks anyway.
