Worth noting also is that this shouldn't be able to break any applications, since the prompt is an interactive-only behavior.

I'll wait a day or so to see if anyone else comments; but if not, I'll back-patch.

Have you done any code-size or speed comparisons?

This would still have the property you complained about originally that WW-plus-D don't form a monotonically increasing sequence, but I think that ship has sailed.

Probably doesn't matter once we widen them to 64 bits though.

As I said before, it'd also be a good idea to provide some evidence that there are other people using that same week definition.

It's not clear to me that it's be okay to assume that the variable input string is null-terminated.

(The side-effects for translation seem like an independent argument against back-patching.)

You might also find it instructive to dig through the archives for past discussions about moving more of pg_dump's logic into the server; that's the area where this has come up over and over.

The questions of whether such a query matches a given index, or could be implemented via mergejoin, etc, remain.

How useful is it to allow the join if things still break the moment you add an ORDER BY?

If you're joining columns of dissimilar collations, you're going to be finding it necessary to specify what collation to use in a lot of places ... so where's the value in making a weird special case for equality?

I wonder though whether any user-facing documentation needs to be adjusted.
