2020. Drug overdose deaths are not violent crimes and increased 31% YoY nationally from 2019 to 2020, and they increased 36% YoY in San Francisco—marginally worse than the rest of the country, mostly due to the increased prevalence of fentanyl in SF vs a couple years ago.

Fentanyl had been more prevalent in rural areas but started rising rapidly in urban areas 2 years ago. Last year was a 70% increase over 2018–obviously unrelated to the current DA. Overdoses are very concerning, but SF is far from unique.

@chesaboudin - the goal should be to do better and there is a way he needs to help get fentanyl off the streets
