What‘s something that seems obvious within your profession, but the general public seems to misunderstand?

There are some incredible companies out there who have HR teams that work very hard to provide benefits in an attempt to make their employee’s lives better. I’m sorry you’ve had bad experiences, but they aren’t universally bad. Hoping you find something better out there soon!!
-
Yeah I know but I was asked to give a comment based on my experience and I did. I worked in the field as one of the good guys. So hope things are progressing and for allowing me to answer this comment with my experience.
-
Companies with HR departments like John is describing are companies that currently find it profitable to give their employees certain benefits. They are a small percentage of employers and their policies/attitudes towards their staff are always subject to change.
-
As in as soon as you have any thing - as minor as workman’s comp to sexual harassment. HR circles the wagons even if you’re one of them. I can’t imagine working at big corps like Fox or CBS- hushing people up. There are good people in HR- but in the end they protect enployER
-
I respectfully disagree, especially as HR continues to branch out into programs (OD) which is 100% for employees. And I work for one of the largest employers in my province. But in
, so I don’t know American labor laws etc. -
If HR departments want what's best for the employees, how come they don't fight against layoffs? The company decides "we need this many new employees" and HR puts that into action. The company decides "we need to lay off this many employees" and HR puts that into action.
-
HR is a business function, so if the business decision is eg redundancy then HR is responsible for dealing with that. HR is still part of the business so can’t fight against it decisions which should be for the good of the business. That’s what unions are for.
-
But I disagree with the OP. I was a HR professional and although my function was to aid the effectiveness of the business, my training was to help people work well and have a good experience at work, thus benefiting business. I was a union member too and went on strike many times

The old line about HR is "remember that you are the threat they are protecting their company from."

Bingo. Former HR rep here. We are NOT your allies. HR exists to limit corp. liability from employment regulation and from employees. Full stop.

At shit companies maybe.

I liked it when it was a Personnel Department. Made me feel like a person. I always hated being a human resource.

Well, I was a contractor. HR wanted me to sign a non-compete. I had already signed one with my employer, the body shop that paid me. The body shop had a contract with the client covering non-competes. Basically, the client was misclassifying my employment.

Highly cynical and inaccurate take. Compliance is one purpose of HR. Lots and lots of companies that have to COMPETE to draw the top talent utilize HR to build a compelling employee experience.
-
Our HR department was nearly 400 strong .The functions you are talking about are the fun ones - the engagement- retention - motivation. Your specific HR rep is there to make your grievance go away to keep the company from getting sued. Yes lots of times your issues get resolved

You are right. I am just going by my interactions w/ HR and what I observe at the company, which is customer focused.

লোড হতে বেশ কিছুক্ষণ সময় নিচ্ছে।
