Just browsed through latest "Ion as a library". Subshells fork for a reason, even when supershell blocks until completion: environment protection. If you do need polluting non-fork, you use "source" command to call it. It's been so for half a century and that's expected behavior

Forking was only removed when a builtin is executed, and Ion is not meant to operate the same way as the Bourne shell or bash
