The town where this happened received a huge boost in tourism and a much needed injection of cash. Weirdly, people wanted to see this “restoration” with their own eyes. Good things, unexpectedly, can come from disasters!

Probably worth noting here that Dunning-Kruger is about context, not character: everyone suffers from it on topics they're ignorant of, even those who are legitimate experts in other topics.

I love this tweet, but I do recall that the grandma who 'restored' this painting was not doing it for fame, glory, or riches, but for love of the art. Can't say the same for the politicians we've been voting in.

Flavia’s point remains the same. As well-intentioned as this woman was, she had no actual skill in art restoration. Her hubris destroyed the original fresco.
