*Taps mic* For those who have been following my research on beauty and the machine: algorithms, machine learning and aesthetics for the past couple of months Save the Date: Public Lectures and Discussions Program 2020 at Sandberg Institute:

  6. I am kind of obsessed with this idea of maintaining class divisions at microscopic level. "the genome of physical objects" etc (tangentially, guess it's why I am also interested in eugenics)

  8. "in that sense, the simulacrum devalues and corrupts the aesthetics of a certain class even if simulacrum and real are identical to the naked eye. I would go as far as saying that the class division is then maintained at microscopic level."

  9. From my lecture: "the simulacrum “devalues” the original by allowing access to the aesthetics of the real to the class of people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it. the algorithm is deployed to maintain the strict class divisions that only money can transcend"

The Balearic Islands have trouble getting enough doctors because they can't afford rent there.

  11. so many seemingly innocuous measures are specifically meant to control certain segments of the population. Or they are meant to keep some groups in systems of exclusion, or to promote specific approaches to "health" etc etc. None of these are neutral or gratuitous

  12. I see so much eugenics everywhere in terms of policy making, media etc but if I pointed out each of these instances, so many would consider me either paranoid or conspiratorial. I believe I am neither. it's just that it has been naturalized to the point of being invisible

I moved to Jordaan 4 years ago and the rent around me tripled. Buying is out of the question (unless you aim for side streets), with appartment of 60m2 going for 1m.

  15. indeed. I mentioned before we've had students who, after being admitted to the school, have had to drop out because they find themselves unexpectedly homeless and unable to find any housing with a reasonable budget

  16. lmao maybe *this* is what will kill the tourist industry in the end 😂 (jokes aside, this also applies to nurses and healthcare personnel as well; people who can no longer afford housing prices meant for "expats" or the local rich)

British/American/French white tourists unconsciously claim space in various ways: being loud at night, always being in the way and unaware of their surroundings. But it's Chinese and Indian tourists that ppl complain about.

I have a personal theory that Amsterdam will actively try to curb tourism once the majority of the tourists will be Indian or Chinese. Part of the reason why a lot of tourists aren't challenged enough in Amsterdam is because of white privilege.

and yet the people will keep voting for the same politicians who created these problems. it's so demoralizing.

  21. but according to the city administration, I should "just cycle" everywhere rather than rely on the public infrastructure to get me from A to B 🙃
