As I prepare return to Westminster next week I want to make it clear to my constituents that I will not be supporting any moves reported in the press to take “no deal” off the table. Anyone who has negotiated anything knows you have to hold your nerve to get the best outcome.

Thanks for your reply - so few MP's actually do. "Holding your nerve" sounds an awful lot like a game of chicken - not, in my view, not a viable negotiating strategy. The EU are not blinking. No actually means "No" on the backstop. A mature negotiator changes tack when required.

In my experience, using the threat to blow both of your own legs off, is not a clever negotiating strategy, particularly when your hand is a 'pair of spades'. Anybody with real negotiating experience, would laugh at such a naive approach.

Brexit is not "making a deal". Brexit is dumping the deal then coming and asking for a new one. "Hold your nerve" is excellent advice if you're going from nothing to something. It is not excellent advice if a) the alternative is bad and b) the other party has nothing to gain.

My experience of business deals is through my own company. I made a number of deals and the one thing they all had was confidentiality. So the playing out of the deal did not have adverse effects in the outside world. This brinkmanship is in the public it has consequences outside
