So it's not necessarily making you hear a certain tone, but it definitely balances while also obviously increasing volume. For me, I can't hear higher-pitched tones. It's to the point where I'd play DnD and people over teams hear my oven go off for pizza instead of me!
For alarms, I use my Fitbit watch which vibrates to wake me up instead of using my phone aswell. I also lipread to confirm what it is that I heard. Best way to describe is you hear someone mumble, and hearing aids add clarity and a bit of volume.

Yeah, I had the same tests and a head scan, they couldn't see anything, and said it could come back, so no obvious sign of damage, it just went one day, came back for a couple of days and been the same for about 5 years. The said if I want fitting for an aid but said no.

I do sometime struggle to hear, it's worse when you have multiple people taking on Teams, or those not disabling mics and have background noise, but the main thing, is if I lay the wrong way, I can't hear the wakey up alarm, fire alarm would be silence as well I guess.
