Convincing a trans person that they're trans because of trauma is incredibly harmful. It's a conversion practice. Lots of people like to make a connection between trauma and gender dysphoria but there's not much research or other evidence to back it up. People need to know that.

I would focus on healing the trauma, while managing your dysphoria in whatever why works best. Can totally understand if you'd want to hold off on something like medical transition before figuring things out more.

If you're into therapy, you could try finding a therapist who specializes in trauma and is open-minded about trans stuff, who's not going to care about what gender you end up identifying as in the end.

I went to a therapist who specializes in both trauma+gender, thats where I came to this conclusion
I’m not saying you’re wrong and I certainly don’t want to be used as a gotcha against trans people but (at least at this point) it seems that my dysphoria is trauma based...?1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Its hard for me to know whether that is an acceptable belief though, or if i should be looking for another cause. I wish there was a simple checklist of gender stuff so I can definitively know but of course life doesn’t work that way lol

This is one reason I wish there was more research into trauma and gender dysphoria because it makes sense that there could be a relationship between the two in some cases but making the connection in other cases could be really harmful.

What's helped me is focusing on what reduces my suffering and makes me happier and letting myself be flexible with explanations, like trying on ideas but not getting rigid about them if that makes sense. Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you.

Yes I agree about that, I think that there are specific instances of individual people for whom trauma and gender correlates, but that there is no general trend among trans people as a whole. Its a tricky subject. And I will try to do that, thanks!
