Robert Stoller, transphobic psychoanalyst, thought transmasculinity was caused by an afab child developing too close of a relationship with their father, while developing a distant relationship with their mother. He summed it up as "Too much father, not enough mother".

I had a psychologist tell me the same but inverse. WFT AMAB here - apparently all my troubles are from having a distant father and smothering mother.

Yeah, Stoller's explanation for trans women and transfeminine people is the reverse of his theory for trans men and transmasc people. He wrote a lot more about trans women and transfeminine people overall.

And I'm sorry you had to deal with that crap. How long ago did that happen, if you don't mind me asking?

Oh jeez, I was afraid you were going tell me something like that. It's frustrating that these ideas are still circulating. Stoller made them up in the Sixties.

Tbh I don’t think he (the counsellor) put much thought or effort into it. I bristled as soon as he said it. But it did affect me for a while, perhaps a few years.
