    Been seeing this quite a bit lately. Transphobic groups are trying to frame conversion therapy bans as meaning that any young person questioning their gender is going to be pushed into transitioning and tying this into their "gender industry" Big Pharma conspiracy theories.pic.twitter.com/htbJRFM1x4

    Article written by Erin Brewer. Gender Industry Hypocrisy Gender Activists Say Children Can't Consent to Therapy, But They Can Consent to Medicalization
    Quote from an article from Partners For Ethical Care. Text reads Ironically, less than two years earlier, in March of 2019, these same activists made just the opposite claims when testifying on Utah House Bill 399, legislation that would require therapists to affirm children’s gender identity. These activists then claimed that children were unable to consent to talk therapy, that it was the government’s responsibility to dictate the kind of therapy a child could access. They declared that any child who needed something other than affirmative therapy could wait until s/he is eighteen to access it.
    How is it that a child can consent to a developmental delay but not to mental health therapy? Why is it okay for the government to ban a therapist from helping a child understand possible underlying causes of gender dysphoria, but it's not okay to protect children from harmful experimental interventions? And why is it okay to force a child to wait until s/he is eighteen to access appropriate mental health services, but that same child is incapable of waiting to get cosmetic interventions that permanently alter the body?

Gender industry activists clearly have an agenda: Deny children therapy that will help them manage and resolve their feelings of discomfort and send them to gender clinics where they will become medicalized for life, providing the gender industry a windfall of income.

        In reality, a young person who was unsure about their gender or how they wanted to address their dysphoria would not be prevented from accessing therapy to help them figure things out. The Utah law is very specific about what it bans and what kind of therapy is acceptable/not CT.pic.twitter.com/o7lWWcpdlQ

        58-1-509. Prohibition on providing conversion therapy to a minor.  As used in this section: "Conversion therapy" means any practice or treatment that seeks to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of a patient or client, including mental health therapy that seeks to change, eliminate, or reduce behaviors, expressions, attractions, or feelings related to a patient or client's sexual orientation or gender identity. "Conversion therapy"does not mean a practice or treatment that does not seek to change a patient or client's sexual orientation or gender identity, including mental health therapy that: (A)  is neutral with respect to sexual orientation or gender identity; (B)  provides assistance to a patient or client undergoing gender transition; (C)  provides acceptance, support, and understanding of a patient or client; (D)  facilitates a patient or client's ability to cope, social support, and identity exploration and development;

        Framing conversion therapy bans as "banning therapy" or "banning all treatments except transition" is a cover for transphobic parents, gender critical therapists, conspiracy theorists and other anti-trans people who want to force trans youth into conversion therapy.

        Transphobes are the ones arguing that trans youth can't consent to medical transition but they can consent to conversion therapy to change their sense of self. Somehow youth are capable of deciding to change their minds but not their bodies. Transphobes are the hypocrites here.

        No trans person is saying that young people can't consent to therapy to explore what gender they are or if transitioning will help them. We want people of all ages to have resources to decide who they and what medical procedures, if any, will help them if they have dysphoria.

        What we oppose is harmful anti-trans conversion practices that are often imposed by parents on their non-consenting trans children or forced on youth by transphobic medical professionals https://www.ourcommons.ca/DocumentViewer/en/43-2/JUST/meeting-14/evidence …pic.twitter.com/aGT8ynmaOo

            My name is Erika Muse and I am a survivor of trans conversion therapy. I underwent conversion therapy at the now-closed youth gender clinic at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, CAMH, in Toronto, with Kenneth Zucker. Yes, that is the same Kenneth Zucker who spoke to you on Tuesday, painting himself as a semi-retired professional and academic arguing for the rights of trans youth.
    Dr. Zucker saw me as a patient for seven years, from the ages of 16 to 23, and denied me trans-affirming health care in the form of both hormones and surgery until I was 22. Dr. Zucker instead put me through what he has termed “desistance treatment” for trans youth. He interrogated me in talk therapy for hours at a time, inquisitorially attacking, damaging and attempting to destroy my identity and my self-esteem, and to make me ashamed and hateful of myself.

        There are far fewer transgender people speaking out publicly about their experiences in conversion therapy as teens, and much of the “gender critical” focus has been on young trans men. I interviewed three; Dan, 19, Austin* (name has been changed to protect identity), 18, and Jayden, 25, who had been subjected to it as teens and are now young adults.

What the three young trans men were subjected to broadly falls in line with what leading “gender critical” therapists recommend: isolate them, cut them off from support, don’t use their preferred name or pronouns, deny their identity, try to make them accept and love being female, and attack the “delusion”.
        In the end, none of them stopped being transgender, and they still have their trans masculine identities. Conversely, all of them admitted that conversion therapy experiences left them traumatised and emotionally scarred.

While therapy should be patient centred, Jayden stated he had: “Never felt so unheard and disrespected” as when he spent years being told who he was, what he should think, and how he should feel about his gender and sexual orientation.

        I know from firsthand experience that conversion practices are no less harmful when a person "chooses" to engage in them. Any practice or therapy that tries to stop someone from being trans is harmful and ineffective.https://kyschevers.medium.com/ideologically-motivated-detransition-as-a-conversion-practice-a-personal-account-ee262035453a …

        Trans people are fighting so that trans people, detrans people and all people questioning/exploring gender have self-determination and access to resources they need to live well, whether that be therapy, medical transition, peer support or no treatments at all.

        We know firsthand how the current medical system is profit-driven, oppressive and controlling. We've been criticizing/resisting it and working to build alternatives for decades. Resisting conversion practices is part of that struggle.https://healthliberationnow.com/mission/
