I wrote about the rules and guidelines of some of the support groups for detrans women I used to belong to. While well-intentioned, how these groups approached dysphoria, trans identity and transitioning reinforced my self-hatred/internalized transphobia.https://link.medium.com/doxHKjTA3db

Here are some of the guidelines from Gender Identity Dropouts, the first (short-lived) group I participated in. I can see how some of this could be helpful for detrans women but it was toxic for me as a transmasculine person. Overall, it's a weird mix of AA and radical feminism.pic.twitter.com/8fSnUBDaRf

At GID we are committed to making peace with being female and being women, however that looks for us. It is not a space for people with alternative gender identities or who understand stopping transition as another leg of their gender journey. At GID we are recovering from “gender identity” as a paradigm, entirely. We do not use alternative pronouns or revere any sort of gender identity in this space.
We recognize that the behaviors we engaged in while identifying as trans were impacted by peer relationships and especially by comparing ourselves to others. We are careful not to “drag each other down” by replicating those overt or unconscious pressures within GID. We no longer try to make ourselves “normal” with respect to gender. We no longer try to best each other with respect to gender.
This is not a program like AA where you are either drinking or not drinking. This is more like a program that centers on your relationship with food or with interpersonal relationships. We can’t avoid being “gendered” by the world at large. But when we retain or re-engage in behaviors that are aligned with transitioning, such as binding, packing, trying to pass as male, indulging in fantasy about surgery, or other “trigger” behaviors — we commit to being honest with ourselves and with the group about the nature of these behaviors and their impact on us and on those around us. There can be room for harm reduction methods; there is always the intention of relieving dysphoria by non-damaging means; but there is not room for justifying self-harm as either of these. Go carefully and rely on your group members for support in discerning where the lines are.
Gender is a contest that we, as females, cannot ever win. As Dropouts, we “give up” that futile quest. We accept that within the patriarchal paradigm, we “lose” the game of gender no matter what we do. In our lives and in the world, we work to challenge and change that paradigm in every way we can. We don’t control the current conditions of life within the patriarchal paradigm, but we are not powerless.

This is from Autotomous Women's Spaces, a forum for detrans and desisted women I belonged to. (Broke up the screenshot so I could fit all the alt-text because being accessible is important.) It was created by some of the same people who started Gender Identity Dropouts.pic.twitter.com/MMVLJ7ZI9h

          9. (5/15/2015) We encourage members to share with honesty about their lives and where they are at in terms of dis-identification from femaleness. However, in this space, we meet with these realities differently by supporting each other’s well-being without supporting actions that do not help us reconcile with ourselves as women.

It is fine to encourage a woman to engage in harm reduction if that is with the acknowledgment that the activity being recommended is not an end-goal to aim for, but rather a stepping stone towards further healing and a temporary alternative to something more harmful. For the purposes of this forum, unhealthy coping mechanisms are
temporary alternative to something more harmful. For the purposes of this forum, unhealthy coping mechanisms are defined as any activities which are physically or mentally harmful (i.e. self-injury) as well as any activities which are counter-productive to the goal of reconciling with our femaleness. Most activities involved in transitioning (identifying as something other than female, choosing a new male name, binding, taking testosterone or other substances that alter one’s hormones, planning/getting surgery [i.e. double mastectomy] and “living as male) are activities we neither support or shame each other for. Women are welcome here regardless of such choices, however, discussions about these actions must include some level of awareness about influence, impact, etc. These activities are not things we celebrate or encourage as positive actions. In this space, we strive to find alternative, healthier ways of dealing with dysphoria.

Gosh it’s confronting to read. First impressions: thought control within tightly policed paradigms. thou must accept what we say you are. any variance from that is self-harm
