From a research ethics point of view, this is appalling. I know research into detransition is sparse but anyone consenting to a study has the right to safety and security. It’s troubling that he put so little thought into the impact it could have on people, even himself.https://twitter.com/trans_safety/status/1360394713434587136 …

Interesting new evidence has been discovered via a Canadian broadcaster website around the rejected detransitioner study by James Caspian. https://transsafety.network/posts/james-caspian-ethics-review-leaked/ …

This kind of shit is why I’m so insistent on understanding not just the motivation but the methods and safeguards that researchers use surrounding trans and detrans issues. With how volatile the political sphere can be, it’s crucial to tend to those whose health is at stake.

TBH, imho, any trans person thinking of participating in any trans related study, should consult with other trans ppl, trans groups both locally, & internationally.

Too much potential for harmful studies (see eg, the Wilk & Lundberg study, so beloved of transphobes like the Beetle bothered & Lundberg)

Given the article this thing was dug up from seems to have been widely distributed around detransitioner groups it looks like the research ethics form might have been leaked to them to bully the ethics board into submission, which is *really* bizarre.

I'm wonder when and how detrans people got ahold of that document because I knew a detrans woman that was in contact with Caspian for years and he didn't share that information with her. He consulted her for feedback on his study and broadened his criteria as a result.

If it was passed to the broadcaster instead who then published it.

Ok, that makes more sense to me. Caspian was not being transparent with the detrans woman he was in contact with. We thought he was running into problems because of how he'd broadened his criteria to better capture the experiences of detrans women.

From what I recall, he got in contact with this detrans woman because of a zine of detrans writing she edited. He was looking for participants for his study, for people who'd had transition-related surgery and then detransed and had reversal surgery. This detrans woman told...

...Caspian that hardly anyone does that, she didn't know of any detrans women who got surgery after detransing. Many never had surgery and most of those who did don't do anything to "reverse" it. He changed the criteria of his study after that.

Right. That seems to be called out in the ethics thing too implying he possibly doesn't know his research subject population well.

It seems like he tried a bit in order to find research participants but I remember how he described detrans women when he was interviewed in the media and felt like he was playing more into people's anxieties than reflecting the complex reality of detrans women's experiences.

So he changed it to include more people cause in his old way it wouldn't have enough? That makes sense, in some radfem circles they considered women who had tried on different pronouns detrans and used it as a way to grow their numbers and ban pediatric trans healthcare.

Yeah, basically. With his adjusted criteria, people would've had to have medically transitioned, maybe even have had surgery. I don't quite recall how much he broadened them.
