From a research ethics point of view, this is appalling. I know research into detransition is sparse but anyone consenting to a study has the right to safety and security. It’s troubling that he put so little thought into the impact it could have on people, even himself.https://twitter.com/trans_safety/status/1360394713434587136 …

Right. That seems to be called out in the ethics thing too implying he possibly doesn't know his research subject population well.

It seems like he tried a bit in order to find research participants but I remember how he described detrans women when he was interviewed in the media and felt like he was playing more into people's anxieties than reflecting the complex reality of detrans women's experiences.

So he changed it to include more people cause in his old way it wouldn't have enough? That makes sense, in some radfem circles they considered women who had tried on different pronouns detrans and used it as a way to grow their numbers and ban pediatric trans healthcare.

Yeah, basically. With his adjusted criteria, people would've had to have medically transitioned, maybe even have had surgery. I don't quite recall how much he broadened them.
