I used the term "conversion therapy" to describe my experience of detransitioning because it's a term most people will recognize, even though it's not the best fit. I never saw a therapist or other mental health professional, I participated in support groups for detrans women.

Activists trying to eliminate "conversion therapy" are now creating broader language to cover more practices than formal "therapy". Some talk about "conversion practices" and SOGIECE which stands for sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression change efforts.

SOGIECE covers any attempt to change or suppress a person's sexuality, gender identity and/or gender expression.pic.twitter.com/oKWhdZZZJX

Screenshot from an article on "conversion therapy" and SOGIECE. Transcript: SOGIECE is the term used to refer to these less well-defined attempts to persuade and affirm rigid expectations of cisgender amd heterosexual expressions and identities. The distinction between SOGIECE and conversion therapy is not always clear, and SOGIECE often leads to more formalized experiences of conversion therapy like targeting one's sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or a combination of those traits, practiced by healthcare providers, religious leaders, amd everyday people who take on the "mission" of policing the genders and sexual orientations of the people around them.

What I did would count as a "gender identity change effort" and "conversion practices" is a better fit than "conversion therapy" but most people are unfamiliar with those terms. The language is still evolving in order to better name these harmful beliefs and practices.

That's one reason I came up with "ideologically motivated detransition". My experience was similar to "conversion therapy" and ex-gay ministries in some ways but different in others. My old community and it's specific theories and practices is a relatively new development.

Language describing "conversion therapy", SOGIECE and related practices will continue to develop as activists who oppose them work to understand them better and more survivors speak out. I'm doing what I can help more people resist SOGIECE, in whatever form they take.
