Not all transphobic detrans people are "ex-trans". Some detrans people develop transphobic beliefs because transphobia is normalized in many detrans support spaces. You can't tell whether a detrans person is "ex-trans" based on their beliefs alone.

I'm not sure, but I strongly suspect the ex-gay picture might have looked a bit different in the 90s, when I was in high school and first read about the movement. I remember stories about men who used a lot of drugs and had mental illness who felt taken advantage of by gay men.

Yeah, there are definitely cases like that. They just seem on the rarer side from what I've read, though granted there is not a ton of in-depth research into ex-gay groups. People also learn to tell particular stories once they join those groups, so there's that to consider too.

But yeah, I could see how stuff like OCD or a history of sexual abuse could give people confusing feelings to work through, leading to what could look like changes in sexuality or gender identity. Like I said shit's complicated.

OCD in particular can manifest as gender dysphoria- Turns out it's hard to tell the difference between two types of intrusive, disturbing thoughts that you might want to transition.
