"Alternative treatments for gender dysphoria" have practically no research to back them up and people should know that before they try them out. Most of the evidence to support these treatments are anecdotal at best.

There are a handful of case studies of people with gender dysphoria being treated with therapy instead of transition but most of these people were judged be different from " true transsexuals" and there was almost never long-term follow-up.

Oh geez, where to start with that one? Basically medical professionals came up with their classification of what a real transsexual was and there were a few different definitions floating around. The criteria varied but generally having felt trans since they were a child,...

...talking about being "trapped in the wrong body", able to pass well, etc. There was usually something about sexuality, either being attracted to the "right" sex or having no interest in sex because they were so freaked out by their genitals.

The concept of "true transsexuals" tells us more about how doctors used to think of trans people than what trans people were actually like. "True transsexuals" were the ones most likely to be approved for transition, so eveyone who wanted to transition tried to sound like one.
