Sometime I ought go over my collection of articles and notes and share what I found. Basically, it's much the same as Mallory demonstrates here, therapists tried very hard with little success.

There's few things I'd add to this discussion. The first is case studies of "pseudo-transsexuals" treated with psychotherapy. These were the kinds of people the gender clinics tried to weed out with gatekeeping. Many of them were judged to be self-hating gay people.

And the second is the Case Western Reserve gender clinic, which seemed to be the most enthusiastic about pushing therapy onto trans people. That clinic was founded by Stephen Levine, who's recently given expert testimony against pediatric transition in multiple court cases.

Another psychiatrist connected with that clinic was Leslie Lothstein, who saw psychotherapy as the treatment of choice for gender dysphoria and wrote a bunch of articles about that. He also wrote a whole book arguing that trans men are mentally ill and need therapy.

Even Lothstein recognized that therapy didn't "cure" many of his patients but he thought they were just too "sick" to be helped by it. In his view, some people were just so far gone that medical transition was the only thing that helped them.

It's stunning how committed some people are to viewing us as mentally ill that even when they can't deny that medical transition works better than therapy they turn that into a sign of how psychologically damaged we are.
