This is a thread on our new book 'TERF Wars: Feminism and the fight for transgender futures', where I'll say a bit about the context behind it, the format (for those who might not know the weird details of academic publishing), and the contents.

The loss of UK prisoners' rights is the forgotten injustice of the Covid-19 crisis | Meanwhile the Government ploughs on with plans to build more prisons - digging deeper into the prisons crisis as our broken criminal justice system lays in tatters.

THREAD: It has been 132 days since prison visits were suspended. Last week, lawyers acting on behalf of children with a parent in prison sent a formal letter before claim to government concerning their failure to ensure meaningful contact between children + their parent inside.

🚨 URGENT ACTION 🚨 Right now, prisons in the UK are dangerously hot. People are locked in cells with no ventilation and no fans for 22-24 hours a day. We know people in a number of prisons who report feeling unwell and unable to sleep.

To end the harm inflicted by our prison system on pregnant women and mothers and babies on Mother & Baby Units, the government must take immediate action to end the imprisonment of women. Failure to do so will mean more tragedies like the stillbirth and death of a baby in prison.

More training & tweaks to the current system do not address the fundamental question of why pregnant women and babies are in prison in the first place. Our response to the government's announcement on changes to care of pregnant women & mothers in prison:

It’s too hot in prisons right now, in humane & combined with the defacto solitary confinement unbelievably disproportionate punishment. We can’t, as a society, sanction the locking up of people in these conditions. For what, our imagined safety? No thanks, take action now

The government should have followed in the footsteps of other countries by releasing women from prison. Instead, they created an unworkable release scheme & implemented 15-weeks of solitary confinement which has caused untold harm to women & their families. 1/
