I gave a talk to a room where the undergrads were mostly women of color and they seemed so happy to see me that I almost cried. I don't think they knew how happy I was to see them, too.

The author is my son! He loves this school filled with amazing kids. How do we maintain a culture of academic excellence without making it toxic? (Cough, higher ed?) The Underlying Toxic Atmosphere at Jefferson – tjTODAY

This is a fantastic takedown of the “statistical analysis” purporting that mathematicians of a higher caliber were more likely to oppose diversity statements. (My favorite part: the authors are recommended to take an elementary statistics course.)

statistics reveal that 1/ data are human-driven (and reflect human racism) and 2/ good analysis of data can reveal bias and racism. Now what? Crackdown - Smoking-gun evidence emerges for racial bias in American courts | Graphic detail | The Economist

When I first saw the headline, I had assumed it was from the late 1940s or early 50s. It's from 2013.

The study that led to this headline used TIME-DIARIES to document decreased time spent by women on housework. Weight for women completing the diaries wasn't measured. The authors used population changes in weight.

"Less housework may be leading to dumb pseudo-scientific papers trying to peddle sexism." There, fixed it for CBS.

I have maintained for many years that the plural group form of mathematician should be “a meander”. To see why, I suggest camping out at DEN next week and it’ll become clear.

If we acknowledge the role of *affect* in learning and doing mathematics, we can teach better, communicate better and, yes, do research better. It’s an emotional game all the while some try to maintain its objectivity. is opening a door; walk in and experience it

A Times insider told me (not so long ago) that a significant # of the editors, especially those over 40, are innumerate—and simply cannot get their heads around data.
