On phone w/a United rep. Some of my points expired yesterday. So 1 upgrade request (return leg from AMS to DEN) got cancelled. Now trying to cancel upgrade to ORD so I can be on waitlist for the much longer return flight. Sigh. Point expiration is frustrating, .

Spoiler: Written patterns attempt to capture the wholeness of design solutions.... but there are limits to what they can convey. Personal heuristics enable us design a solution that fits into our specific context.

My latest essay exploring the limits to how much you can know and effectively communicate about real world phenomena (and patterns) with Christian Kohls, presented at PLoP 2019: Elephants, Patterns, and Heuristics.

Aaaand it's gone. (There's a waiting list on the ticket page, in case we get some last minute cancellations.) On the bright side, you could come to one of the workshops by these beautiful people.

It is sooo dreary and rainy at the moment. sucks. One good thing: I managed to take a break from working and went for a jog late morning, just as it was starting to rain. But now it is absolutely pouring and windy and miserable outside.

Experience reports can be about anything related to agile practices and learning: technical practices, team/group dynamics, exploratory testing, leadership, transformations, coaching... as long as you, the author share your role and reflections as part of the report

But lest you think early Naturalist Decision Making researchers were total optimists they caution against thinking incremental approaches are guaranteed. They have dangers: irreversibility creeping in w/o being noticed, good money being thrown after bad, or ineffective feedback

Klein et al also say:few decisions require once-&-for-all non reversible commitment; more typically tentative actions are possible, errors can be corrected, choices do not totally close off other options,&what has been accomplished might be useful even if 1 changes direction

what is an error, though, is failing to incrementally improve one's understanding of relevant beliefs, preferences, and options as the problem evolves. 2/2
