This is such a gorgeous piece of writing, Rebecca! Feel a longing for IKEA meatballs now...

Are you writing a book about this? Or considered it? Great piece of writing & makes me very curious to know more. (Paul)

Thanks! Not currently, working on a different kind of book about food at the moment and writing an academic journal article on canteens from mid-century. – Possibly will write about public eating for a second book, though!

Yes to all of it. Living in Singapore, the hawker centre is a canteen style of eating that's very much a level playing field - one of the last remaining cheap options open to all (Singaporeans love IKEA too) - the tissue packet widely understood as a 'reserved' sign on your table

i love this detail about the tissue packet ! would love to go to a hawker centre

I’m currently writing about design & decoration of World War 2 British Restaurants. They fed minds as well as bodies by inviting artists & art students to decorate them. Talking about them
@socialhistsoc conference. This example in Hammersmith incl murals by Ithell Colquhounpic.twitter.com/eO0BLHbH1r

Ah yes I've seen some of the murals! SO gorgeous and such a shame so many of them were painted over! Look forward to seeing the book / paper !
