9 days after my article about NY's TV facility prisons came out, NY DOCCS changed the policy. Then, they told me I was confused, and that prisoners could always receive free books. (Note: I am not confused)

Why does America report on these stories as if they’re normal. A nine year old crowd funding for his dying brother is not inspiring, its deeply tragic.

The criminal justice system exists not to avenge victims but to make sure the state follows its own rules when taking away the freedom of ppl accused of crimes. Victims shouldn’t expect more

Dear and : Your current link to NYPD FOIL request forms leads to a "We're sorry, this doesn't exist" page. I'll refrain from making jokes about this and just request that you fix it, please.

I've been talking about prisons at parties for 10 years, and now Kim Kardashian is talking about reform at the White House. Does this mean I'm no longer the most depressing person to get stuck making small talk with?

Y’all, check out my journal article on cell phone use in prisons and its terrible consequences. I found that prison and parole policies in CA create an incentive to use them but being detected doing so delays parole for parole-eligible lifers.

Criminal justice policy is eternally threatened by low-probability, highly-salient risks getting overblown to drive policy, often w strongly racist implications. We have an entire name for it: the Willie Horton Effect. It is essential to call it out when it happens.

People engaged in violence have often experienced serious trauma in childhood. This “should force us to reconsider the simplified model of offenders-and-victims, and to allow more second chances”
