When I was looking for jobs outside of academia, I didn’t know what “transferable” skills I learned during my PhD. Now when I give advice to others, here is what I say. 1) An ability to synthesize huge amounts of information: literature & data.

2) Understand & use data. In development there’s tons of data collected—assessments, monitoring & evaluation—much of it not designed or used well. 3) Build arguments with evidence for program & policy design. Very important in proposal writing.

Something I’ve learned working with youth in many different contexts is that you can’t aim for something that you don’t know about. There is very little mentoring for PhDs who want to go outside of academia. This is partially due to exposure. It’s also due to shame.

When PhDs ask me for advice about non-academic careers, I’m often asked to keep it confidential as they don’t want their advisor to know they are considering other options. I hope that we can start being more open about careers.

I’m proud of what I’ve done outside academia. My advisors are also proud. One wells up with tears every time I see him letting me know that.

I suspect more advisors are open to this as well. There could be misperceived norms at work. So I ask advisors to find ways to let their students know it’s OK to explore other careers.
