So, this feels like incremental progress. A huge scientific effort, a promising but still somewhat inconclusive result. Neither triumph nor failure: just a regular day as scientist.

We used multivariate representational similarity analyses. The data analyses are opportunistic, rather than confirmatory. When we started this study, the methods we used here hadn’t been invented yet. In retrospect, our experiment wasn't ideal for this method.

Top line results: (i) in kids, we could predict patterns of brain responses only in terms of the social meaning of the stimuli; (ii) these abstract representations were more robust as children got older, and (iii) selectively reduced in children diagnosed with Autism.

New paper out today with Hilary Richardson, measuring brain responses during Theory of Mind in 125 children (including 29 diagnosed with Autism). Truly heroic data collection effort, lasting more than eight years!

Great to see throwing institutional weight behind open, reproducible research practices including , & stating that "Making research open is a core part of research transparency, and open research practices are rewarded in promotion decisions"

Reminds me of this, from the spring: adults think kids these days will be worse at delaying gratification. They are actually better.

We’ve denigrated youth for millennia. “Authoritarian people think youth are less respectful of their elders, intelligent people think youth are less intelligent, well-read people think youth enjoy reading less.” H/t ⁦
