Emotions are information. It makes zero sense to think you shouldn't feel a certain way about something. It's simply a read-out of what you think on that issue, including your inexplicit ideas. Suppressing them suppresses their information.

If you have two ideas that conflict, you could set about changing one or both. Yes, by finding better explanations, but still.
-
Yes. "Change" meant: in the same sense that you can't make yourself believe in God by fiat. You can't directly change the idea; you must solve the problem / find a better one.

In reference to your other tweet too; Do you think emotions are akin to mental images - albeit non-visual? Both can be read outs about what you think on an issue.

All emotions are not directly mediated by thought: ingest something you're intolerant to (or a drug) and watch your mood/emotions change as a pure result of physiology rather than 'what you think'.
-
Agreed on physiology. Biggest effects on emotions seem to be: gut, sex hormone levels and pain.

Emotional memory and non emotional memory are stored differently. So in some ways thoughts and emotions (a form of thought) can be quite different. One can influence emotions and thoughts differently. People have an inborn ability to preference one type or the other.

I like the way Alfred Korzybski (of "The map is not the territory" fame) puts this: There's no clear distinction between thinking and feeling. Both are part of a more general process he calls "semantic reactions".
-
(I'm not yet sure if his switch from a verb (tho ~gerund) to a noun is critical. I'm generally in the "verb everything" camp but it might be that he's trying to point at something important. The structure of language matters more than vocab, so that wouldn't be surprising.)
