I was just remarking last night that the presumption of Asians/Asian Americans as an apolitical electorate is fundamentally challenged by the fact that literally thousands of expat Taiwanese will fly to Taiwan during major elections in order to vote. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/11/world/asia/taiwan-election-china.html?smtyp=cur&smid=fb-nytimes …

That includes thousands from North America, as well as some members of my family. They aren’t unusual in that regard, they have done so in previous elections too.

I’m always struck by the depth of political passion in the Asian American community. I’ve never understood the stereotype of our community as apolitical because that has never been my experience of us.

I think our peoples’ lived experiences of war, trauma, and colonialization have ingrained a deep tradition of giving a shit, and doing something about it whenever and wherever we can. And we see that in the ways we participate politically, both in Asia and in America.

Those issues are class based since Asians have the highest inequality rates since middle class/rich Asian immigrants and refugees are lumped together unfortunately.

point well-taken...tho I'd hardly conflate Asians and Asian Americans here. Also, I fear that, in the American context, diasporic Taiwanese, who are US LPRs, going back to vote will promote the "sojourner myth" and "perpetual foreigner

What's wrong with that actually? Asian America needs to move beyond this tired America is the hegemony rhetoric. I'm a Taiwanese-American who cares deeply and involved i politics of both places and protecting mutually resonant and universal values.

Good gawd. Hurrah for the Taiwanese! Koreans/KoreaAmericans who can— Green Card holders or dual citizens— do the same in major population centers. Jpnz/JpnzAms, not so much, if at all. Now, I'm wondering abt overseas Viet and Pilipinos.
