Probably best to avoid ambiguous spellings ("cancellation" vs "cancelation", say) in API design. Also best to avoid spelling errors.

Perhaps, but I think standard spelling somewhere is better than standard spelling nowhere. (Lots of people have to deal with e.g. 'color'.)

Well, sure. The problem in the "cancellation" vs "cancelation" case is they're both standard spellings in the same places.
