      @DavidBruant @bz_moz @Ms2ger @lukas_nowacki got something. It seems to throw that when just _reading_ `HTMLElement.prototype.ownerDocument`

      @kuvos @bz_moz @Ms2ger @lukas_nowacki That's normal isn't it? HTMLElement.prototype is not a Node instance.

      @DavidBruant @kuvos @bz_moz @ms2ger yes, but should it not just return undefined instead of throwing an exception?

      @bz_moz it's a generic check to see if we can get to a `document` object. runs indiscriminately on many objects. whoever made that api... :/

      @bz_moz of course, we can with try/catch. but since when has that become the preferred way of checking a property :'(

      @kuvos It's been that way forever for DOM props on random objects; the behavior you see almost 15 years old.

      @bz_moz doesn't make it "right" (tm)... :) it just bit us hard for no apparent reason. due to some user script doing wonky stuff, sigh.

          @bz_moz and that's good. my beef is with throwing when you're just reading a property value. there's no non-try-catch way of guarding for it

          @kuvos Sure, but if you expose the property on objects for which it makes no sense, there's just no way to do anything sane with gets. :(
