OKAY. This is a thread, but it’s worth it I promise. On Reddit today, user u/NoNoNo_OhOhOh posted a page from acclaimed Irish novelist John Boyne’s latest book, ‘The Traveller At the Gates of Wisdom. Note the ingredients.pic.twitter.com/4RTgZxtUT7

If those ingredients look weird to you, it is because they are straight of out of the Zelda game Breath of the Wildpic.twitter.com/JpebdXJqP1

Is it an homage? An Easter egg? Hmm. The book is *not* a fantasy. It’s a historical drama set in the real world. I had a hunch, and tried a google search.pic.twitter.com/o3yHQO4nEU

So: while John Boyne was doing a perfunctory google search for how to dye clothes red he found a site listing monster parts and accidentally put them in his Very Serious book. I am very embarrassed for him and this is my nightmare but it’s also very funny

The Irish Times review of the book is under the impression it is deliberate. Given the controversies about his previous book, My Brother's Name is Jessica, it's hard to tell his intention.pic.twitter.com/TOwOzFb9rm

Wow. Gotta love it when you can't tell whether it's deep, meaningful deconstructivist destablishing of historical integrity or just really lazy research.

Ironically, he has criticised the role of video games recently. So maybe he's not a Zelda fan.pic.twitter.com/VuPlaAyZ4J

that seems like a VERY generous reading to me

Yeah, it makes the assumption that every anachronism is a subtle literary technique, rather than a mistake that got past the editors. The review (paywalled) is not positive overall, ending with 'things that surround characters may change, but bad writing stays the same.'
