This understanding of liberty was more or less universally accepted—including by the Founding Fathers, the “classical liberals,” et al.—until about 50 years ago.https://twitter.com/brad_polumbo/status/1424545781986598914 …

“The right used to understand academic freedom as liberty to pursue truth, not license to teach lies.” This is an incoherent and unworkable definition & way to view academic freedom. Who decides what the truth is? What the lies are?

The answer to Brad’s question, by the way, is that we decide using our faculties of reason and moral conscience, without which no government—least of all self-government—can exist.

Something tells me that society deciding which ideas are "true" or not, and then curtailing freedom of expression based on that assessment, is not going to go well for social conservatives. (One need only look at bans over misgendering for an example). Reap what you sow.

There has literally never been a society in the history of humanity that hasn’t had a way of “deciding what is true or not” what are you talking about dude

Sorry, what I meant was society, VIA THE GOVERNMENT, deciding which ideas are "true" or not, and then curtailing freedom of expression based on that assessment, is not going to go well for social conservatives

The public funds public universities; therefore, the public gets to decide how those funds are used and which values they transmit.

Sure. And my point is that the best way to do that is to set up a system in universities that protects unpopular opinions and fringe views. Because guess whose ideas are fringe and unpopular on 99% of college campuses? In dozens of state legislatures? Yours and mine.
