I agree. The laws are too broad. They are, indeed, speech codes, and unnecessary ones.https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/05/opinion/anti-critical-race-theory-laws-are-un-american.html?smid=tw-share …

      • Public education is a state monopoly, not a marketplace of ideas. • Voters, thru state legislatures, determine the curriculum. • Children should be protected from racial scapegoating. • "File a federal lawsuit" puts the onus on parents, rather than schools, which is unjust.

The question for you, Sullivan, and others is: what is your solution? Writing an op-ed cannot stop an ideolgoical cartel. Telling parents to "file a lawsuit" puts an extraordinary burden on them. Abusive curricula are already widespread despite existing civil rights law.

Now apply point 3 to the history and current state of public education in this country as it relates to black people... And tell me how your CRT free utopia doesn’t end up supporting the segregation already existing.

That does not seem like an informed response to the essay. "Because these laws often aim to protect the feelings of hypothetical children, they are dangerously imprecise. State governments exercise a high degree of lawful control over K-12 curriculum." 1/4

"But broad, vague laws violate due process and fundamental fairness because they don’t give the teachers fair warning of what’s prohibited. For example, the Tennessee statute prohibits a public school from including in a course of instruction any 'concept' that promotes..." 2/4

What else would you then ban? What is the criteria for something to be banned? What are the sanctions? What is the appeal process?

Solution that addresses both your concerns: abolish the Dept of Education and government schools.
