What genuinely confuses me about so many on the right embracing these CRT bans is this: What happened to wanting a government so small you can drown it in a bathtub and taking responsibility for your own community?

We can simultaneously advocate for (1) restricting race essentialism and political indoctrination in existing public schools, and (2) radically expanding school choice and providing education dollars to families instead of public school bureaucracies. There is no contradiction.

Expanding school choice reduces government footprint. Codifying curricular restrictions expands it.

Except nobody is teaching CRT in K-12, so the whole thing is yet another right-wing lie used as an excuse to tell teachers not to teach history.

What about the principle of subsidiarity that's been dear to the conservative movement for years? Why not fight this at the school board level and let each community decide their standards and make school board races something people pay more attention to?

Yeah, I this is where my own argument about principle of subsidiarity breaks down. These issues are being fought on a national level by the other side and so you can argue this creates a collective action problem. You need a wedge issue to combat this & close an activism gap.
