The list of ugly ideas schools could teach is infinite. An affirmative approach to reform that focuses on pedagogy + frameworks --while advocating for greater choice + competition in K-12-- may be less scintillating than enacting a ban; probably more efficacious in the long run.https://twitter.com/realchrisrufo/status/1412174756950855685 …

Serious question: if a local school district adopted a Klan-based curriculum teaching race essentialism, collective guilt, and racial superiority theory, would you support or oppose a law to ban it?

The "CRT bans" do exactly that. They restrict certain pedagogies and frameworks that traffic in racial scapegoating; the same legislators also advocate for more school choice.

Glad they're advocating for choice, as they should. Candidly, haven't you already acknowledged that some of these bills, by, for example, specifying material that can't be assigned/required, go beyond addressing methodology + framework? You object to banning specific texts too.

As I told you, restricting specific texts is not my preferred strategy, but it's entirely legitimate and preferable to nothing. But please answer my question about restricting a Klan curriculum. I'm genuinely curious.

I don’t think you’re doing the movement justice by pushing for an overt admission to banning KKK material. We don’t need “gotcha’s”; it’s a distraction. Show what’s “actually” being taught ‘right now’ under CRT pedagogy. It’s horrific on its own w/o hyperbole.

FWIW I think you’re closer to agreement than you think - in the end we want parents to have control over what is taught - school choice for those who can’t just move/pay for it & reasonable exercise over govt sponsored curriculum in taxpayer-funded K-12.

It’s totally sane to object to banning texts - *that* to me is where this argument is legitimized. The risk is letting that legitimate argument wash over the parts that are *not* illiberal but about ensuring ideological secularism in state school.

I don't believe this is a fair question because we all know that critical race theory (and it's other postmodern cousins) is nowhere near the realm of the KKK. Not even on the same planet. And I say that as someone who despises all of "critical theory" and it's subfields.

People still aren’t grasping the difference between theory and “praxis.” That’s the downside of the broad label of “CRT.” In general it’s been a successful campaign but in this area we see some people like @kmele @thomaschattwill and @DavidAFrench who aren’t getting it.
