Universities, including state universities, are in need of reform--badly. But the wrong way to do it is to ban the teaching of certain theories or the advocacy of certain positions. The right way is to expand viewpoint diversity. Break the ideological monopolies and oligopolies.

This would have been a feasible suggestion in 1971; it's dangerously naive in 2021. There must be structural reforms to public universities. Taxpayers should not be subsidizing an unaccountable regime of ideologues who want to undermine their core values. It's anti-democratic.

At best, a "viewpoint diversity" policy will become a minor affirmative action program for conservative professors, who will be held up as symbols, while the vast machine underneath them—like the *400 diversity commissars* at UC Berkeley—crushes onward.

Agree Chris. FPIW will be developing a state policy agenda for this

Diversity by diktat — even if it’s viewpoint diversity, is bound to fail & certain to limit academic freedom. Authoritarian approaches have never supported genuine diversity of any kind — history speaks to it.

That's true, that's all "viewpoint diversity" is - privileging of racism and misogyny that gets pumped out by people paid to write made-to-order articles that nobody reads except people who get paid to read them.

“Viewpoint diversity” is a term that depends entirely on who gets to decide what constitutes diversity. If the institution is already captured, those who define it for the institution will inevitably curate the definition to maximize appearances while neutering the substance.

Hilarious. As someone with multiple degrees from UC Berkeley, I can tell you that it is very easy to obtain conservative viewpoints both from professors of liberal arts degrees and in technical fields. It is too deeply connected to the Federal government to be otherwise.

Diversity of thought also no longer exists in many public & private k-12 schools. Also, problematic is that only the most prestigious and hardest schools to get into, which often serve the kids of well-connected political elites, seem to offer progs. like Jas Madison @Princeton
