“What do you like about being White?” I asked this question to anti- Critical Race Theory advocate Christopher Rufo. He stated that Whiteness was always only painted as negative, so I asked him to offer something different. Peep his response:pic.twitter.com/H5IkAyv2Co

The irony is that you and I have more in common with one another (same country, language, education, profession, socioeconomic status) than I have with a fisherman in Sweden or you have with a farmer in Congo. Let's build on that common foundation, not divide the country.

This is exactly what James Baldwin observed in his essay "The Discovery of What it Means to be an American."

Good for you for not answering the question. It was a lose/lose question designed to provoke you into having white pride and not just being upset by white disparagement.

Of course you would view it that way... But I have a question.. How can someone provoke you to having White pride if you White??? Serious question

Well said, Rufo. And @marclamonthill it isn’t about NOT seeing race. It’s about NOT ascribing arbitrary things to a racial category.

The irony is, in the west, economically speaking, there is greater inequality within races than between them There is a larger gap between the richest and poorest black person than between the average black person and average white person

And when Marc makes the off-hand comment about talking about "blackness" as a culture he could riff on he's only talking about one aspect of AMERICAN culture. It certainly isn't the culture of an African black or a Hispanic black.

Yes, by all means let's do that. but you cannot build a better future while ignoring or downplaying the past or the present. Unless you engage and accept past and present completely as ugly as it may be without illusion or evasion, that future will be built on a fiction.

“English” ~ Germanic origins. Judeo Christian religion ~ middle eastern. Democracy~ Mediterranean. None of these are “white”. The question was racial profiling at worst. + heritage of Rufo likely Italian. Historical assimilation challenges for those peoples as well. Labels suck.

I would have liked to have heard him explain his theory that whiteness is viewed as a negative. The things he described as "positive things" being ascribed to whiteness was him trying to flip the fact that those are usually negative stereotypes ascribed to being black.
