This is the right answer. Many of our ancestors felt that they had to identify as “white” because America didn’t like the part of Europe/Middle East they came from, or their religion. We identify as American citizens, but we shouldn’t have to embrace white identity anymore.

But that ignores ethnogenesis. Marc also isn’t “black” in precisely the same sense that you aren’t “white.” He has analogous ethnic/tribal specificity in his lineage. Yet that fact has not prevented a national consciousness among his people. Why does it do so in your case?

True that. White is American concept. European identity is based on relationship to the land, not on artificial divide.
