Academic freedom is a myth; it's Marcuse's "repressive tolerance" in action. And sadly, organizations such as FIRE, which have good intentions, often serve to legitimize this structure and reinforce the myth.
For public universities, this arrangement is malevolent. The public, which pays for these institutions, is excluded from decision-making and, in red states, the institution is actively hostile to the values and priorities of the public.
