The retreat to semantics is a sign of immense weakness. We have them on the defensive and they are not even defending the substance. 
It's an intellectually lazy, curricular referencing conspiracy theory. There's no "substance" to defend.
Why do you say "we have them on the defensive?" I'm not sure that's true.
