Normative, mimetic, and arguably even coercive isomorphism are all at work in attempts to wokeify the institutions—and in attempts to de-wokeify them.https://twitter.com/realchrisrufo/status/1390020298834026502 …

BREAKING: The Tennessee State House passes a bill banning critical race theory indoctrination in public schools. The legislation, which moves to the Senate, would prohibit schools from promoting race essentialism, collective guilt, and state-sanctioned racism. The fight is on. pic.twitter.com/RtIVb8lcyQ

I'm actually not sure that de-wokeification is all three. A state legislature banning something is pure coercive.

I don't think it's "coercive" in the normal sense of the word. It protects public school students from compelled speech by the state. It is an exercise in the legitimate democratic power of the legislature and limits the power of the state bureaucracy. Good policy all around.

Aaron and I are using these terms in the technical sense defined in DiMaggio and Powell. 1983. "The Iron Cage Revisited" American Sociological Review

In this sense, coercive means an organization does something because the regulatory state and/or monopsonistic customers demand it. Normative means skilled professionals expect it. Memetic means industry peers do it.

Meaning the monopsony of conservative voters in this case?

No, it usually means stuff like if McDonalds demands high standards for beef that's as important as if USDA does so.

In this case the state legislature has regulatory authority over public schools and large states have monopsonistic power over the textbook market. The latter btw is why you should care about California even if you either don't live here or send your kids to private school.

Interesting! Thanks for explaining. If we can get TX, TN, and FL, that will have a huge impact in the national textbook market. That's the goal.
