The basic truth of the recurring Substack melodrama is that it was largely instigated by a horde of people who are genuinely batshit insane -- like not just regular "brain addled by the internet" insane, but "as close as we can reasonably get to a clinical diagnosis" insane
I don't think it's insanity as much as it's jealousy. They want everyone locked into the old system of gatekeepers and meager paychecks.
