This doesn’t even touch on the worst thing about the suburbs, which is that they are atomizing and lonely and discourage human interaction outside of your immediate household.

I used to have this exact opinion. Then we moved to a small town a year ago and our social life is so much richer and better connected than in the city, even amidst a pandemic. The "atomized suburb" is a myth!

Small town =/= suburb.

suburb =/= suburb It's a wide category; a lot of well-connected mature neighborhoods (like the one I live in) started as suburbs. The cul de sac where we lived in the SF Bay Area was closely knit. Particulars do matter, but you can build real community almost anywhere.

The burbs of the Bay Area are exactly what I’m familiar with and despise tbh. But yes, there’s a wide range.
