In the 1960s, the new civil rights regime closed most mental hospitals and gave the mentally ill their “freedom.”
What replaced the asylums is a homelessness more cruel than what came before.

Thank you, Yoram. I spent a lot of time reporting this piece and the situation on the ground is heartbreaking, tragic, and totally self-inflicted. We need a new conception of freedom that is balanced with obligation to protect and to help.

You’re doing such great work, Chris. I appreciate your ability to weave together personal stories, theory and policy. And I agree: Too many people were hypnotized by the idea that freedom was the answer to all questions. The suffering that was unleashed—it’s like the ocean.

Thank you, that means a lot. I would love to meet you next time you're in the US. I have followed your work with interest, especially your writing on Marxism and the Left.
