Commissioner Shea
@NYPDShea hits the nail on the head, “I don’t understand why we are releasing or pushing people out of prison not to give them second chances, but to put them into homeless shelters -or in this case a hotel -and expect good outcomes”https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/31/nyregion/brandon-elliot-asian-attack-nyc.html … - Show replies

I suppose there's the philosophical question of whether one has the right to be (and choose to remain) mentally incompetent. But a lot of people want to be healthy, but they are just given pills and a kick out the door, and that probably isn't particularly useful long-term.

Have you read MY BROTHER RON by Clayton Cramer? He covers much the same material and reaches very similar conclusions, as seen through the filter of his family's struggle to get treatment for his schizophrenic brother. Deinstutionalization is a tragedy.

We need county and state mental hospitals/asylums that again hold hundreds, if not thousands. And insurance companies must be forced to pay for long-term residential psychiatric care.

I’ve heard so many of my psychologist friends talk about this. It’s compassion fascism in a nutshell: the best intentions that spawn the worst of outcomes.
