America spent fifty years dismantling the state psychiatric hospitals. In their place, we have created an "invisible asylum" that condemns the mentally ill to the street, the prison, and the emergency room. Here's my reporting on this human catastrophe.https://www.city-journal.org/olympia-washington-mental-hospitals …

The condemned are also innocent bystanders who get vivaciously attacked by mentally ill who should be in psych wards. We are living this every day in NYC. Slashed a babyhttps://twitter.com/StopAntisemites/status/1377665868360978440?s=20 …

Trigger Warning - attack on the Jewish family, including a 1 year old baby, was caught on film. Watch as Darryl Jones walks by the couple and child then TURNS BACK to stab/cut them with his knife. This was NOT random; he saw Jews and WALKED BACK to attack them. Commissioner Shea @NYPDShea hits the nail on the head, “I don’t understand why we are releasing or pushing people out of prison not to give them second chances, but to put them into homeless shelters -or in this case a hotel -and expect good outcomes”https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/31/nyregion/brandon-elliot-asian-attack-nyc.html …

I suppose there's the philosophical question of whether one has the right to be (and choose to remain) mentally incompetent. But a lot of people want to be healthy, but they are just given pills and a kick out the door, and that probably isn't particularly useful long-term.

Have you read MY BROTHER RON by Clayton Cramer? He covers much the same material and reaches very similar conclusions, as seen through the filter of his family's struggle to get treatment for his schizophrenic brother. Deinstutionalization is a tragedy.

We need county and state mental hospitals/asylums that again hold hundreds, if not thousands. And insurance companies must be forced to pay for long-term residential psychiatric care.

I’ve heard so many of my psychologist friends talk about this. It’s compassion fascism in a nutshell: the best intentions that spawn the worst of outcomes.
