I’ve refused *hundreds* of engagements by right-wing figures who I felt would use myself and my message for ends I didn’t agree with. Rather than endearing me to the left, this has meant I rarely receive engagements at all, and I’m *still* accused of being “right wing”.

The only way out, as I see it, is simply to operate as independently as possible, whenever possible. This is a far, far more difficult road, with a smaller chance of success (in work that is already facing what seem like insurmountable odds).

Am I doing my activism favors by taking this route? I’m betting on it, but it isn’t at all certain. Should the injustice faced by dissenters from the Muslim world be held hostage to this trap? Of course not, but in reality, it is, and it makes me *furious*.
