Sadly, Philly is hardly alone. Literacy outcomes are an absolute stain on our nation. If you look only at black boys, your heart will break. Is it any surprise that 70 percent of our incarcerated population does not read above a 4th grade level? Criminal indeed.

The great Frederick Douglass said, “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” And the inverse is surely true. If you don’t learn to read, you will never be free. What are we doing to our children, especially our Black boys, by not ensuring they learn this crucial skill?
